Our self-image, what and who we think we are, including our personal appearances, are only a reflection of our ego. It is not our true self. Our true self, or substance, is Spirit. It is formless, without race, color, and gender. We are ‘all of this’ not just one thing or another.
Ego constantly wants approval. Ego lives in fear and doubt. It looks outside of itself and believes what the perceptive senses tell it. It doesn’t question or reason about Truth, it only follows what it perceives and what it thinks it wants. And believe me, it always wants more and more; nothing is ever enough. Ego also needs control. It is like a shadow that lurks over our shoulder and whispers in our ear. It is that little negative voice that accompanies us wherever we go and whatever we do. “I have to be better, bigger, and more beautiful” it cries. “I need to have more money - and more power!”
Ego is a prison built by each and every one of us over years of neglecting the Soul. We have allowed the walls of ego to encase us and we didn’t question its validity. How do we escape? Where is the key? How can we unlock the lock of this harmony destroyer?
We must take a look at our wants and desires. Are they ego based? Is status important? Do we want more and more of material goods without spending time on our mental well-being?
Sincere honesty, being honest with ourselves, is imperative to unlock our internal chamber of our sub-conscious. See, it’s not wrong to have everything we need and live a life of abundance. It’s OK to want to live a good and joyous life, as long as we do not identify ourselves with material belongings. We are born to enjoy the goods of the Universe; they are here to make our lives comfortable. In reality, we are not materials beings depending on outer things and circumstances. But we are meant to be harmonious, peaceful, and loving spiritual entities.
What is wrong is the constant focus on earthly material goals and goods, instead of being interested in our emotional and mental wellbeing. Most of us are neglecting our spiritual development. Our spiritual awakening is of utmost importance to the ‘real’ us. It is not important what our neighbor thinks, or anyone else for that matter. It is important what we think, and how we feel. Are we truly happy and fulfilled? Are we as good as we can be and as loving as we should be? Do we care about others and do we see the connection to all living things? We should all ask ourselves these questions.
We must come to the realization that we are neither beneath, nor above anyone. We just are. We don’t have to defend our viewpoints to anyone. We don’t have to make excuses or be apologetic for not fitting into the mold of society. All we have to do is act good, do good, and think good – at all times. Our Soul, Spirit, Consciousness, is the source of all Universal qualities. Peace, harmony, love, creativity, happiness – all of these are natural and given freely to us. They are available for the taking.
The world of ‘ego’ is bound by time, place, status, stress, and all earthly limitations. It is destined to create fear and doubt. It is self-centered and self-absorbed. It is shallow and destructive, clingy and demanding. We must go beyond the ego and allow the light of eternal peace and love to shine upon us! We must re-condition our sub-conscious mind with truth and guard our conscious mind from false impressions. So let us be still, and remember: Let Go of E-Go!
