I’ve been pondering this idea of “being of service” lately. Does being of service and the purpose in life have something in common? When I’m exploring the purpose of life, my life especially, I’m taking under consideration, that the main purpose of life is to enjoy what has been given to me. William W. Walter, one of the great metaphysics teacher of the early 1900’s, stated: “The purpose of life is to unfold from within and through conscious recognition enjoy the fullness and goodness of it.” Yes, I can agree to that statement, but I think our purpose is also to be of service.
“Do you think about your destiny, your purpose? Is your purpose serving others, raising a family, or to be an inventor of a new technology that helps mankind? Maybe you think your destiny is to be a great artist or healer of some kind?
Whatever the situation, the truth is, our purpose is to ENJOY the journey of our lives. (We’ll get to being of service in a minute) We all chose different paths, different likes, different people, and different jobs. We care for different causes. But no matter what our choice was, the most important fact remains, that we must love the path we chose. Our lives’ destiny is to grow spiritually, but it's up to us at what pace. It's up to us to find the right road and travel easily and without hardship. It's up to us to stick with it and it's up to us to love our voyages.
By being of service, however, I don’t necessarily mean to be involved in all possible charitable causes, feeding the homeless, or volunteering for animal protection. I realized during this thought process, and contemplating this concept, that we are already of service. Yes, every single one of us is “of service” by nature. Think about it. Every job, for instance, has a function that is of service. A plumber, a teacher, an accountant. Every mother is of service to her children. Every father is of service to his family. Every artist contributes to the beauty of this planet.
You might say there are people who haven’t worked a day in their lives, what service are they providing? We must not only see the shallow surface of perceptive appearance. We must look deeper. We all play a role and we all are helpmates in this big puzzle of cosmic consciousness. Maybe this seemingly shiftless person is necessary to teach his/her mate or family to be more patient or forgiving. Or maybe this person just hasn’t found his/her purpose yet. We must be clear-minded and forgiving and we must not judge others, as there is plenty of self-correction for us to do. Plenty to stay focused on. Remember: Unfolding from within (focusing within ourselves, not from outside sensatory experience) and through conscious recognition (actually being aware of what we are thinking and doing) enjoying (appreciating) the fullness of the Allness of Good.
What are we contributing to this wonderful life of ours? Now, that we have explored being of service a little bit more closely, I’m certain we can agree that our contribution to this world will be enhanced by a job well done. We will be known by our efforts to be good, kind and loving, - and love will return back to us.
