It’s interesting to observe yourself and find that the voice in your head is constantly talking. Have you ever tried to stop it?
I’m aware that devoted meditation students are telling us to quiet our thoughts, but no matter how successful your practice of meditation might be, your thoughts are the essence of your being alive and therefore will always be with you. It wouldn’t be natural in this state of being to stop thinking, it would mean you have moved on to another plane of existence. Wouldn’t it?
What’s important is to start listening, here and now, to the excessive chatter in our head and observe its mood. Is it positive, negative, or just going on and on about something? Am I being thoughtful or flighty, am I being reasonable or stubborn? Always weighing the choices we have each and every minute.
To make this clear, the voice in our head is our reasoning ability. It will debate between the options we have. It will present both sides, good or bad, right or wrong, but we must choose the positive side only. If we don’t like what we see, we must change our sense about it. It takes practice…however, we can retrain our voice to instantly seek the right and good side of all. It’s that simple.
I believe that our personal behavior should set the standard for right living in this world. We all should be examples of positive thinking, good clean living—and thereby teach and inspire others. Just imagine the peace and love we would contribute to a world that experiences so much pain. Again, it takes practice.
